Moving Castro Halloween to Rincon Hill, South Beach or Mission Bay?

You may have read in the newspapers over the past month that Supervisor Bevan Dufty and Mayor Gavin Newsom have a strong desire to move the Castro Halloween event out of the Castro. Where would they like to move it you ask?

Well, the scuttlebutt is that the Mayor and Supervisor Dufty would like to move it to either Piers 30/32 (near Bryant and The Embarcadero on the border of Rincon Hill and inside the South Beach neighborhood) or Seawall Lot 337 (Parking Lot A behind AT&T Park, on Third Street in Mission Bay). Assuming the Port has its preferences observed, it is unlikely that the event would happen at Piers 30/32.

In 2006, 10 folks were injured when shooting erupted at Halloween in the Castro. Unfortunately, it seems that this event has turned into an annual gathering of Bay Area gang members in addition to folks who just want to put on some fun costumes and drag and have a good time. I have my doubts that folks would really show up in numbers at an eastern waterfront hosted Halloween, but that doesn’t remove the fact that residents living in the proposed area should have a chance to voice our opinions for or against the Halloween event coming to our neck of the woods.

In the meanwhile, I recommend that you write or call Supervisors Chris Daly (our District 6 representative) and Bevan Dufty (the Castro’s Supervisor) along with Mayor Newsom and the City’s Entertainment Commission (who would need to issue a permit for a Halloween party) to express your support or disdain for the idea of hosting a big Halloween party in the Rincon Hill, South Beach, and/or Mission Bay area along with a request to have a public meeting at a time that is convenient for most working people (say, 6pm or after through the week) on this matter.
