Children’s Village gets eviction notice
San Francisco will lose more than 100 childcare spaces if the Roman Catholic Archdiocese goes ahead with plans to shutter the Children’s Village at the site of the old St. Joseph’s Church in South of Market. Parents were recently notified that the facility will close its doors in June of 2010. Catholic Charities, which has supported the facility for years, has had a “change of mission” and the Church itself, which is shopping the site around to developers, would prefer to deliver an “unencumbered” property.
Catholic Charities has made it clear that the name of the facility and even the tables and chairs are their property and won’t be there after June 2010, just as Mercy Housing opens a large new affordable family housing facility less than two blocks north of the site. South of Market families will be most impacted by the closure.
Parents have formed “Friends of Children’s Village,” hoping to negotiate directly with the Archdiocese to extend the lease for the current site until a permanent solution can be found, and have reached out to Supervisor Chris Daly, the Mayor’s Office, SEIU, influential Catholic donors and the SoMa Leadership Council. They’ll present a status report next week and ask for our support.
