Why are Mid-Market and the Tenderloin in such bad shape?

This past week’s Board of Supervisors Budget Committee included the hot topic of the Twitter Payroll Tax Exclusion. One of the justifications for granting an incentive for Twitter to move to the former San Francisco Mart building between 9th and 10th on Market Street is that the area has been downtrodden for years with many empty commercial spaces.

I really enjoyed my friend h. brown’s public comments on the topic, and I think he was spot on about why Mid-Market and the Tenderloin become such scary areas after dark. Here are his comments:
