Wine and Ice Cream Destinations Outside of SoMa

While South of Market has a cornucopia of great treats, a boy has to leave the roost once in awhile and explore the world around him. Two places that I’d like to recommend that you seek out are Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream (on Harrison Street at 24th – easily reached via BART, the 14-Mission bus or the 12-Folsom bus) and Barrique, a new wine bar on Pacific (between Sansome and Montgomery – easily reached via the 10-Townsend or 12-Folsom bus).
The latest ingenious ice cream flavor at Humphry Slocombe is Elvis The Fat Years which is banana ice cream swirled with bacon peanut brittle. If you don’t want to go all the way out to Harrison and 24th to try the various awesome and ever-changing flavors, you can get Secret Breakfast ice cream at Blue Bottle’s SFMOMA cafe on the 5th floor rooftop terrace.
If you are more of a wine connoisseur, head up to the Barbary Coast Neighborhood and the border of North Beach/Chinatown to Barrique at 461 Pacific Avenue. I was invited to a neighborhood party there last week, and loved that all of their wine is poured straight from a barrel (see photo above).
