For the first time since 2005, there’ll be a march commemorating MLK day in San Francisco.
A sampling of related acitivies on Monday, January 21st include:
- 10 a.m. – Freedom March, starts at Fourth and Towsend (Caltrain station), up 3rd Street to Market Street, and west to the Civic Center where there will a MLK Rally and Teach-In at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
- 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – MLK Rally and Teach-in, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, www.norcalmlk.org
My favorite MLK quote is, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” That’s a quote that inspires me to involve myself in my local, state, and national government despite my full-time job requiring more and more of my time – it matters.
Take a few hours to better understand how you can be a part of the solution … to revisit issues affecting us locally / regionally / nationally like racism, discrimination based on age, gender identity, sexual orientation, and so on, disenfranchisement, civil rights, basic human rights, etc. … provide hope and leadership to our youth. While considering these points of view, take a minute to consider how our country’s changing demographics influences the social tensions, the ability for a community to maintain its connections (fabric, if you will), and, at the end of the day, just who in the world is going to pay all of the bills created by baby boom politicians for our systems that still haven’t brought America to the point where everyone is treated equally by our government? To help with those thoughts, give this Chronicle podcast a listen.
