Heart of SoMa happens at Terra Gallery in Rincon Hill this Wednesday! Proceeds go to benefit non-profit Life Learning Academy in San Francisco. From the event’s press release:

The big event happening this fall, Heart of SoMa 2011 promises to be a memorable occasion capturing the spirit – and the heart — of San Francisco’s most vibrant neighborhood.

A sensational evening of music, art and community, complimented by creative culinary offerings from the City’s finest restaurants, Heart of SoMa 2010 takes place Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011 from 7-10 p.m., at Terra Gallery, 511 Harrison St., in San Francisco’s South of Market (SoMa) District.

Special guest Pete Escovedo, legendary Latin Jazz percussionist, will perform and salute the efforts of Life Learning Academy, the beneficiary of the event. Hospitalitysponsors include many of San Francisco’s most unique new restaurants and nightspots including: Alexander’s Steakhouse, Bix, Fifth Floor, Pedro’s Cantina and Waterbar.

“The SoMa community has really come together to put on a one-of-a-kind variety spectacular,” said Hans Koch of Webcor Development Advisors, one of the event’s sponsors. “Terra donated the space, restaurants jumped aboard and other community leaders, residents and merchants have given generously to make this happen and support a good cause.”

Heart of SoMa 2011 will raise money to benefit the Life Learning Academy (www.lifelearningacademysf.org), a San Francisco Unified School District charter school serving high-school aged youth who have been involved in thejuvenile justice system, or who face challenges including serious school failure, gang involvement, poverty, abuse and substance abuse.

World famous percussionist Pete Escovedo and the Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra will perform.  An artist who broke down the barriers between Smooth Jazz, Salsa, Latin Jazz and contemporary music, Escovedo’s name has been synonymous in the music industry for more than 50 years. A Bay Area native, he began his musical journey while attending high school in Oakland.  At the age of sixteen, Escovedo began playing the saxophone and thendiscovered percussion, which became his love of rhythm and his dream of playing Latin Jazz music.

VIP dignitaries, corporate sponsors and high-level donors will have an opportunity to mingle with Escovedo and other featured artists/guests at a special VIP reception from 6-7 p.m.

Tickets are available for $75 ($100 at the door) and proceeds benefit the Life Learning Academy. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.heartofsoma.com.

“Terra Gallery is at the heart of the growing SoMa District, where dozens of high-rise towers   –now home to more than 4,000 new neighborhood residents – have sprouted up in the City’s fastest growing neighborhood,” said David Kriozere, principal at Urban West Associates, developer of One Rincon Hill. “It’s heartwarming to see how the SoMa community has joined together.”

Heart of SoMa is a non-profit initiative focused on building community in the greater SoMa District.  The event is a celebration, yet also a kick off–meant to inspire people living and working in SoMa to engaged in their community.

“We’re hoping Heart of SoMa will be a spark to get the SoMa community involved with Life Learning Academy and other organizations,” Kriozere added.

“Heart of SoMa is all about community, giving back and everybody working together,” said Dr. Teri Delane, principal, Life Learning Academy. “We are thrilled that we can be included in such a spectacular and worthwhile event.”
