Independence Day Weekend Activities

While I’ll be celebrating the 4th down the coast, there are plenty of activities for those you staying close to home this weekend.
Tonight is the “First Thursday Art Walk” where art galleries open their doors in the evenings for folks to check out the latest works. A lot of folks like to begin the evening at 49 Geary where a number of galleries are located. A listing of possible participating art dealers helps you navigate where to go. A lot of folks like to end up at Rincon Hill’s 111 Minna Street for a drink after the art walk.
4th of July festivities at Pier 39 begin at 1 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled for 9:30 p.m., but I have to warn you that fog certainly put the damper on last night’s fireworks … and will probably interfere with Friday’s as well. Oh well …. that’s San Francisco for ya.
The Fillmore Jazz Festival happens this weekend. Learn more about the musical groups scheduled on the event web site.
On Sunday, experience the Asian Art Museum courtesy Target Stores as it is a “First Free Sunday.” Between 2p.m. and 4p.m. on Sunday, check out Merola’s Schwabacher Summer Concert at Yerba Buena Gardens.
If the economy has you down and you just need some outright goofiness, might I suggest the Carboard Tube Fighting League Battle and Children’s Tournament on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Dolores Park (Doloroes and 18th Streets). Believe it or not, this event does have its own web site.
Happy 4th of July!
