Weekend Fun: Film Night, Opera in the Park

Sunday Streets was wonderful last Sunday. I volunteered to play crossing guard at 23rd and Illinois Street, and it was great to see so many families with big grins on their faces while they were out on their bicycles, rollerblades, and walking for exercise. I’m going to be out of town for the next Sunday Streets event on the 14th that coincides with the South Beach, Mission Bay, and Rincon Hill Block Party, but I’ll be envying those of you who can go.
This weekend provides some more great, free activities for those of you willing to venture to other neighborhoods.
Saturday evening at dusk (about 8pm), film night in Washington Square Park (North Beach) is showing the movie Il Postino. I recommend arriving EARLY and getting close to the speakers.
On Sunday afternoon, my favorite excuse to pull together some wine and picnic knick knacks arrives in the form of the San Francisco Opera’s Opera in the Park event in Golden Gate Park. The event happens at Sharon Meadow at 1:30 p.m. Again, I recommend getting there with your blanket, wine, cheese, crackers, Cheetos, and whatever other snacks nice and early (11-ish is my typical target time) to hear a sampling of opera from the season’s upcoming performances. I’m not a big Opera fan, but the Golden Gate Park setting and the sampling of different types of operas is very pleasant and easy to digest (compared to a 3-4 hour performance of a single opera that can get a little, um, boring).
Have a safe, fun weekend!
