The following safety and security recommendations are based on advice and suggestions from a number of safety and security information sources including SFPD, Patrol Special Police, USA On Watch, SF-Safety Awareness for Everyone, Community Patrol, Triangle Martial Arts Association and more……

COMMUNITY PATROL RECOMMENDATIONS

GOT A WHISTLE?

(022710)

SAFETY WHISTLES SAVE LIVES

Citizen safety programs and disaster preparedness programs all recommend the use of safety whistles for emergency communication.  A simple aluminum safety whistle that attaches to your key ring can be used to attract attention when you feel threatened, when you are being attacked or if you find yourself trapped following a disaster.

1 long blow for ‘YES’,   2 long blows for  ‘NO’   and 3 short blows repeated for ‘SOS or HELP

Whistles are often available through safety programs, first aid and camping supply stores etc.

PROTECT YOUR VEHICLE & PROPERTY

(021910)

THEFTS FROM VEHICLES

After a successful SFPD undercover focus by the Southern Station, it appears thefts from vehicles in the area are on the rise again, as seen in the activity report above.  While you cannot eliminate such crimes entirely, some simple preventative measures may prevent you from experience the financial loss and trouble of replacing a broken window and stolen personal belongings :

1.        Try to park in well lit, well travelled areas (not always possible, of course)

2.        Leave NOTHING visible in your vehicle that would attract attention. This includes window mounted holders for GPS units, change, CD holders, envelopes, jackets etc.

3.        Leave NOTHING of excessive value in your vehicle, whether hidden or not. Take it with you.

4.        Don’t assume your vehicle is safe because you park in a secured parking structure or garage. Criminals can slip past security gates.

5.        If you do observe suspicious people around your or other vehicles, call police to report it and note as much information about the suspects as you can.

If you hear or know of anything crime or safety related happening within our neighborhood which you believe others should be aware of, please let us know by sending an e-mail to KenCraig@CommunityPatrolUSA.org . We will be sure to pass on any information received to the most appropriate referral organization. NOTE however, you should ALWAYS contact SFPD FIRST to report criminal acts or crime in progress.

SFPD Southern Station Community Meeting Captain Daniel A. McDonough hosts a monthly on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 6pm to 7:30pm at 510 7th Street (old SF Police Officers Association building). Get involved, become a part of the solution, and attend as many of these Community Meetings as you can.

Community Patrol USA promotes and provides information and assistance in the deployment of 5 major community safety and security programs:

1.        COMMUNITY COLLABORATIVE ON SAFETY & SECURITY (CCoSS) PROGRAM

2.        NEIGHBORHOOD , BUILDING, BUISINESS WATCH (NBBW) PROGRAM

3.        CITIZEN PATROL (CP) PROGRAM

4.        CRIME ACTIVITY REPORTING (CAR) PROGRAM

5.        CRIME ALERT SYSTEM (CAS) PROGRAM
