As some of you may know, Captain McDonaugh retired from the SFPD a couple of months ago. We wish him well!
Our new captain sent out an introductory email to community advocates yesterday that I am re-posting below …
Dear Community Members,
My name is Greg McEachern and I am the newly appointed Commanding Officer of Southern Station. I have been settling in to my new assignment for the past month and the busy tasks of running this great station. I author this e-mail as an introduction of myself and of my vision for Southern Station and the SOMA community and to tell you that I am truly honored and thrilled to be serving your community as the newest Commanding Officer of the Station that serves you.
I am proud to say that I am a 19 year veteran of the San Francisco Police Department, a 4th Generation San Franciscan and a 2nd Generation Police Officer serving the citizen’s of San Francisco. I grew up in the Richmond District of San Francisco attending Star of the Sea Grammar School, Sacred Heart High School and San Francisco State University. Much of my youth was spent in various areas of the city including the Richmond District and North Beach and I am proud to say that I am keenly aware of the deep traditions of San Francisco and the varying communities and residents that encompass our city.
Throughout my law enforcement career I have had various assignments that have helped develop my leadership skills and prepare me for this new assignment. After graduating the Police Academy in 1991 I proudly served the citizens of San Francisco as a uniformed Officer, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. During those 19 years I served at Bayview Station, Tenderloin Station, Mission Station, Southern Station, Northern Station and Park Station. In early 2009 I was moved from patrol to the Police Academy where I served the next year as the Director of Training before returning once again to patrol in early 2010. After a very brief return to patrol I was assigned by Chief George Gascón to be the interim manager of the San Francisco Police Department’s Crime Lab in March after the crime lab “scandal” broke. During the assignment as the Crime Lab Manager I worked with Chief George Gascón, Assistant Chief Jeff Godown, and Captain David Lazar to review and implement new policies, procedures, and training at the crime lab. After serving as the manager of the crime lab I was promoted to the rank of Captain by Chief Gascón on June 19th and assigned as the Commanding Officer of Southern Station.
While I believe my patrol experience and various assignments within the Police Department will help aid me in leading the Officer’s at Southern Station and serving the SOMA neighborhood the various assignments alone do not tell the full picture. During the almost eighteen years I spent on patrol I am proud to say that I served twelve of those years at Southern Station; the station I consider “HOME.” From 1996 to 2008 I served as both a Sergeant and Lieutenant at Southern Station and I watched as the SOMA area grew from vacant ware houses to a vibrant community of condo’s, loft’s, night clubs and even a baseball stadium. From 2000 to 2008 I was the Commanding Officer at AT&T Park where I oversaw all events related to the ballpark including Major League Baseball’s All-Star game in 2007.
Suffice is to say I feel comfortable returning home to the Southern District with a broad knowledge base of the issues affecting SOMA including thefts from vehicles, quality of life concerns, pedestrian safety, and nightclub related violence. My vision for Southern Station and the SOMA area is to reduce crime, help solve community issues, and engage the community to help us succeed in our efforts. As part of engaging the community I look forward to working with not only the residents of SOMA but also with the night club owners in the district and the Entertainment Commission to not only foster the vibrant nightlife famous in the SOMA district but also ensure the safety of all who live and visit the SOMA community. At the forefront of my efforts is the belief that community engagement is a priority and that collaborative relationship between the fine men and women of Southern Station and the SOMA community is what is paramount for our success. I look forward to meeting many of you at our community meetings and working with you towards a better SOMA. Please feel free to contact me if you have concerns and know that you can also voice your questions or concerns at our stations e-mail address which is firstname.lastname@example.org.
