Graphic Hit-and-Run Accident Captured on Video Exhibits a Comfortably Numb, Spectator Society

This surveillance video that captured the hit-and-run of a 78-year-old man last Friday in downtown Hartford, Connecticut blew my mind when I saw the reactions of drivers in their cars and people on the streets. It takes the “bowling alone” idea that Americans are losing their sense of community to another unpleasant level.

If you see a person hit by a car, having a seizure, or otherwise in trouble – please see what you can do to help them. I know California is a litigious state and none of us want to do anything we’re not trained or qualified to do – but make a call on your cell phone to 911 at the bare minimum. Please don’t ignore what happened and walk on by as the people in this video do. Let’s not become a nation of spectators – get involved in your community!
