Perhaps a traffic signal cycle that affords pedestrians an exclusive crossing period without worry of negotiating the crosswalk area with turning vehicles is what we need. You have probably seen such intersections at Stockton and O’Farrell, Folsom and 4th, and some other dangerous intersections. Here is video of an intersection in Oakland’s Chinatown that I recorded on Saturday that shows just such an arrangement with the bonus of patterns painted inside the crosswalk stripes, seeming to help keep most drivers clear of the crosswalk. Why can’t we do this in South of Market?
